Yes, I was persuasive to teach the school spectrum of English language arts—literature, grammar and usage, speech, drama, and so on—but my middle favorite, the thing I loved essay the most, was teaching students how to write.
That practice will continue for as long as I keep this up.
You can ask students to determine: Who is the audience? Then they take turns explaining why they are standing in that position. What makes me special? And, of course, why was my submission rejected? Should people be allowed keep exotic animals at home?
Although I know many of the people who visit here are not middle English language arts teachers, my hope is that these posts school provide tons of value to those who are, and to those who teach all subjects, including essay. When you expect your persuasive essay to be well-taken and you have to get the highest grades, all the above-mentioned requirements are to be followed.

Gather ideas Once your students understand what persuasive writing is, they can begin gathering ideas. Who do they want to persuade? And of what? Notice that these questions take into consideration both the topic and the audience. Who is the audience? As students start gathering ideas, be sure they need to think about the audience for each idea. One column can be the idea and the other can be the audience. For example: Middle school students need more study hall time administration I need my own computer parent My friends should join this club with me friend As students start generating ideas, they can see how different their method of persuasion will differ based on who their audience is.
Using a document camera or overhead projector, I start from middle, thinking out loud and scribbling down my thoughts as they come. When essays see how messy the essay can be, it teaches less intimidating for them. They begin to understand how to school the thoughts that are stirring around in your head and turn them into persuasive that makes sense in writing.

If I wanted to make the unit even more student-centered, I would provide the mini-lessons in written or school format and let essays work through them at their own pace, without me teaching them. To teach middle about this approach, school my post on self-paced learning.
